In honor of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, we want to highlight the incredible work of local shelters and rescues, whose compassion, grit, and dedication help thousands of animals each year. Shelters provide a vital service in our community, giving animals a chance at better lives while supporting public health and educating the community on responsible pet ownership.
From the Humane Society of West Michigan to the Kent County Animal Shelter and smaller rescues like Fig and Friends Pet Rescue and Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue, our local shelters and rescues work tirelessly. Let’s take a closer look at what they do, the unique challenges they face today, and how we, as a community, can lend a hand.
The Critical Role of Animal Shelters
Shelters and rescues provide essential care for abandoned, neglected, or homeless animals, helping to rehome thousands of dogs, cats, and other small animals each year. Their work involves:
- Rescue and Intake: Shelters are often the first stop for lost, abandoned, or stray animals. They work around the clock to intake animals in need, assess their health, and prepare them for adoption.
- Medical Care: Many animals arrive with health issues that require immediate attention. Shelters often provide basic veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and treatment for any medical conditions. This care not only makes adoption possible but also prevents the spread of diseases in the community.
- Behavioral Support: For animals who have suffered neglect or abuse, shelters invest time and resources in behavior modification, socialization, and enrichment to help them adjust to their future homes.
- Community Education: Shelters educate the public on responsible pet ownership, promote spaying and neutering, and offer resources on pet care. This work helps prevent future instances of neglect and abandonment.

The Growing Challenges Shelters Face
In recent years, the demands on animal shelters have grown tremendously. Increased intake numbers, rising costs, and limited resources have made shelter work more difficult than ever. Here are some of the specific challenges they are facing:
- Rising Intakes and Limited Space: Many shelters are seeing an increase in animals due to various economic factors, such as rising costs of pet care and housing instability. With limited space, shelters face difficult choices and often rely heavily on fosters to house animals.
- Mental Health Impacts on Staff and Volunteers: Working in animal welfare can be rewarding but also emotionally taxing. Shelter staff and volunteers often experience “compassion fatigue” from dealing with the daily challenges of caring for animals in need.
- Increased Veterinary and Operating Costs: The cost of medical supplies, food, and facility maintenance has risen dramatically. Shelters must constantly find new sources of funding and rely on community donations to stay afloat.
- Longer Stays for Animals: In the past few years, shelters have seen longer wait times for adoptions, which puts additional strain on their resources. This is partly due to changes in adoption trends and increased need for behavioral training for certain animals.

- Fig and Friends Pet Rescue: This smaller rescue focuses on the rehabilitation and rehoming of animals with special medical or behavioral needs. Their commitment to giving all animals a chance at a better life, regardless of the cost or time involved, is inspiring.
- Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue: Hearts of Hope works specifically with dogs, rescuing them from high-risk situations and giving them a second chance through foster homes and adoption. Their network of volunteers and fosters have helped save hundreds of dogs, many of whom would not have had a chance without them.

How You Can Help
There are several ways to support our local shelters, whether you have time, resources, or simply a caring heart:
- Adopt or Foster an Animal: One of the best ways to support shelters is to adopt a pet if you’re able, or offer a temporary foster home. Fosters help relieve overcrowding, especially for animals that may need extra time to adjust.
- Volunteer Your Time: Shelters rely heavily on volunteers to help with everything from walking dogs to cleaning kennels. This work lightens the load on shelter staff and ensures that every animal receives love and attention.
- Donate Supplies or Funds: Check with your local shelter to see what they need most. Many are in need of pet food, cleaning supplies, blankets, and toys. Financial donations also go a long way in covering medical and operational costs.
- Advocate and Spread Awareness: Help spread the word about responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering, and the importance of adopting animals rather than purchasing them from breeders. The more people know, the better we can support these vital organizations.
- Sponsor an Animal’s Care: Some shelters allow you to sponsor a specific animal, covering their medical or daily care costs until they’re adopted. This is an impactful way to directly help a pet in need.
