Frequently Asked Questions During Fall

1. Do you provide emergency and urgent veterinary care for dogs and cats?

Yes. Family Friends Veterinary Hospital provides emergency and urgent veterinary care for dogs and cats in addition to our full range of general practice services. We offer same-day emergency appointments during designated urgent care hours and are equipped to treat many common pet emergencies, illnesses, and injuries.

2. What types of pet emergencies can your hospital treat on-site?

We commonly treat urgent and emergency conditions such as vomiting or diarrhea, difficulty breathing, limping or injuries, wounds, allergic reactions, ear infections, sudden illness, pain, and other time-sensitive concerns. If your pet’s condition requires specialty or overnight care beyond our scope, our team will help guide you on next steps by facilitating transfers to partnering 24/7 care providers.

3. How do I know if my pet’s condition is an emergency or something that can wait for urgent care?

If you’re unsure, we encourage you to call our hospital at any time to discuss your pet’s symptoms with a team member. You can also visit our Urgent Care page on our website and use our Pet Health Checker to help determine whether your pet should be seen urgently.

4. What are your emergency and extended veterinary care hours?

Our emergency and urgent care hours are:

  • Monday–Saturday: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM

  • Sunday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Our general practice hours are:

  • Monday–Thursday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

  • Friday: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM

  • Saturday: 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Current hours and availability are always listed on our website, check for holiday hours.

5. How is receiving emergency care at a full-service veterinary hospital different from going to a 24-hour ER?

At a full-service veterinary hospital like ours, your pet’s emergency care is connected to ongoing wellness and preventative services. This continuity allows for better follow-up, familiarity with your pet’s medical history, and long-term care planning—without the need to transfer records between facilities.

6. I found a tick on my pet. I was able to remove it at home, now what?

If you’ve removed a tick from your pet, clean the area with mild soap and water and keep an eye out for: any redness, swelling, or irritation. Monitor your pet closely—tick-borne illnesses can take several weeks to show up on bloodwork. If your pet becomes lethargic, loses their appetite, or seems painful or off in any way, contact Family Friends Veterinary Hospital for guidance.

7. What does routine blood work check for in pets?

Routine blood work helps us check your pet’s overall health by evaluating organ function, blood cell counts, and internal changes that aren’t visible on the outside. It can detect early signs of illness, monitor ongoing conditions, and ensure medications or anesthesia are safe for your pet.

8. Why is my pet vomiting and having diarrhea?

Vomiting and diarrhea can happen for many reasons—from eating something they shouldn’t to infections, parasites, or underlying disease. If it lasts more than a day, contains blood, or your pet seems tired or won’t eat, contact Family Friends Veterinary Hospital so we can identify the cause and provide relief.

9. How can I tell if my pet's itchy skin is from allergies or something else?

Seasonal allergies are common, but itching can also come from fleas, skin infections, or food sensitivities. If your pet’s scratching, licking, or losing fur, schedule an exam at Family Friends Veterinary Hospital. We can pinpoint the cause and help get your pet comfortable again.

10. Why does my pet seem stiff or sore in colder weather?

Cold weather can make arthritis and joint stiffness worse in both dogs and cats. You might notice slower movement, hesitation to jump, or stiffness after rest. A checkup at Family Friends Veterinary Hospital can help us assess your pet’s joint health and recommend treatments to keep them moving comfortably year-round.
