At Family Friends Veterinary Hospital, we believe in responsible breeding practices that prioritize the health and well-being of future generations of dogs. Screening for hereditary conditions helps reduce the risk of passing on genetic diseases and ensures that breeding dogs are structurally sound and healthy.
We offer Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and PennHIP certification testing, two widely recognized methods for evaluating joint health, hereditary conditions, and overall soundness in breeding dogs.
OFA testing helps identify hereditary orthopedic and genetic conditions that can impact a dog’s mobility, comfort, and overall health. Screening before breeding allows responsible breeders to make informed decisions and improve the overall health of their breed.
We offer the following OFA screenings:
1Preliminary Testing can be done before 2 years of age, with Basic Cardiac OFA testing available as early as 1 year old. However, official OFA certification requires the dog to be at least 2 years old.
*AKC Registration Paperwork is required to submit OFA certifications.
We recommend visiting the OFA website for breed-specific testing recommendations.
In addition to standard OFA testing, we host Seasonal Clinic Events to be able to offer:
These screenings detect serious hereditary heart and eye conditions that can significantly affect quality of life and breeding suitability. Clinics are scheduled a few months in advance, and we advertise these dates through client emails and social media.
*Owners may also schedule directly with Dr. Pinkos through CardioCare Vet Services, a mobile cardiology service based in Michigan.
PennHIP (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program) is an advanced diagnostic method for detecting hip dysplasia as early as 16 weeks old. It provides a more precise assessment of hip laxity than standard OFA hip evaluations.
We welcome new and existing clients to schedule OFA and PennHIP testing. New clients do not need a prior appointment before testing.
