Why does my veterinarian want a fecal sample?
A: Fecal samples enable veterinarians to determine if your pet has intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia and giardia.

If I know what’s wrong with my pet, why can’t you just give me the medication?
A: Federal law requires that veterinarians establish a valid client-patient-doctor relationship before treating an animal and/or providing medication

Why do I have to test my dog for heartworms if I give a preventative every month?
A: In short, regular testing for heartworms makes sure that the preventive medication is working. Early detection means treatment can begin right away and that gives your dog a much better chance of making a full recovery

How important is the rabies vaccine?
A: The rabies vaccine is of paramount importance for your pets. It not only safeguards their health but also protects you, your family, and the community from this deadly disease. In many places, it’s a legal requirement to ensure public safety

If you ever find your pet in need of immediate emergency care in the Grand Rapids area, especially over-night, we recommend Animal Emergency Hospital or Blue Pearl Emergency Vet

Why is veterinary care so expensive?
A: Vet facilities are not just a doctor’s office for patient visits; they also contain complete laboratories, x-ray and ultrasound suites, surgical and dental suites and pharmacies. The supplies and equipment cost the same as those of our human counterparts, and unfortunately most pets aren’t covered by health insurance.

Can I just stop in for my pets’ nail trim?
A: Unfortunately, no, our assistants are only available by appointment, 8am and 5pm on Weekdays and 8am – 2pm on Saturdays

My pet just had surgery, what should I lookout for at home?
A: While some lack of appetite is normal for a couple days, any longer, or refusal to drink water after a day, are signs for concern. You also want to watch the incision for redness, swelling or discharge. Note any vomiting or diarrhea. And as always, consult your veterinarian with any concerns

Why does the Vet recommend bloodwork before anesthesia?
A: Pre-anesthetic bloodwork allows the Vet to evaluate your pet’s basic organ function. The testing could warn us of a condition not obvious on physical exam that could affect the safety of anesthesia

My pet feels better but I still have medication left. Do I really have to keep giving it?
A: Yes, you should give all medications prescribed until gone. Your pet may look like it feels better, but not be 100% over its illness. If the medication is finished, the illness may reoccur or worsen
